Bogie!

What a great actor he was. Here, in his very last film, he plays perhaps one of his best roles, if not his best, in this excellent boxing drama. By the way, I don't understand why Film Noir is listed as the first genre here.

The Harder They Fall is a very strong film, with an excellent story, very strong acting performances, and a nice pace. The boxing scenes also look surprisingly beautiful, as does the black-and-white photography. However, the story isn't all that special. The film, on the other hand, is, because it is all just very well put together and flows nicely. Although Bogart's amazing acting performance certainly helps with that too. It is totally incomprehensible to me that many people here do not find him impressive at all.

Solid 3.5*

The last film by Hollywood icon Humphrey Bogart is a fine film noir about match-fixing in the boxing world. Certainly not Bogart's best film, but nonetheless a worthy farewell that is unfortunately marred at times by the bumbling of the naive boxing champion. That could have been toned down a bit. Jan Sterling is – as is often the case – merely there to frame the fight.

A strong final film from Humphrey Bogart, who is excellent here as a down-on-his-luck journalist who sells his soul to the seedy world of professional boxing. Rod Steiger is also impressive as his shady new employer. The plot is intelligently constructed and the script has sensible things to say about corruption and integrity. Not all elements come across equally well, but the film is atmospheric and highly entertaining.
