The Secret River plot

In the early 1800s, William Thornhill is convicted of a minor offense and transported to Australia, accompanied by his wife and children. He is exiled to a penal colony in New South Wales to serve his life sentence. He is pardoned after four years. He promises his wife to return to London after five years, having made his fortune as a skipper of settlers' goods on the Hawkesbury River. Together with his family, he also settles on a piece of land on this river. The expansionism of the new settlers is not accepted by the Aboriginals living there, leading to a brutal confrontation between the two populations.
