Initially, I thought I'd stumbled into a slapstick situation. The main character, Amy, is a chatty, ADHD-ridden housewife who tries to run a household on a bouncing ball and consistently fails. She serves burnt or ruined food, chaos reigns supreme, and with the King Football march as a loud backdrop, everything constantly goes haywire. It's only logical that her husband, Jim, falls in love at work with Georgie, an immaculate, naive young colleague with whom he wants to start a new, structured life. It's that simple. So far, a rather silly story. But then the film suddenly takes a turn for the worse. After Jim informs his wife of his intention, Amy takes complete control, and with pronouncements that demonstrate a life wisdom that Jim and his young girlfriend can't match, she ultimately emerges victorious.

The film is strongly reminiscent of 'Brief Encounter', but with the difference that 'the trio' consists of three mature, balanced people who are evenly matched emotionally and intellectually and do not need confrontation to reach the right decision.

Amy is a slovenly woman, dressed in an old bathrobe, who fills her days in her cluttered home listening to the radio and entering contests.

Her unhappily married husband begins an affair with his charming secretary Georgie and wants to start a new life with her.

When Amy learns of the affair, her world collapses.

==================

Although Yvonne Mitchell is a good actress, the character failed to move me and I found her irritating at times and I understood that her husband wanted to get rid of her.

Furthermore, the film suffers from an old-fashioned portrayal of the relationship between Jim and Georgie.

Of course this has to do with the norms and values of the time, which the film had to comply with, but it now seems very old-fashioned.

I think the high score on IMDB for this film is very exaggerated

A play adapted into a film with a strong performance by Mitchel, who we would now consider a mild personality disorder. The hopelessness within her husband's life, a good performance by Quayle, manifests in patriarchal behavior, ultimately revealing the lack of love in Syms, who in turn makes a sincere declaration of love to a father figure. The human interaction on an emotional level is skillfully portrayed without exaggeration. The central question in this film: do you dare to truly choose yourself, no matter what? Cinematically well-framed with strong close-ups. Noteworthy: the neighbor who asks his wife for the front door key. What a patriarchal overtone... 4*
