In the year 2009, clues are found from the Mayan era that predict that December 21, 2012 will be the end of the world as we know it and that the transition to something new is taking place. When Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) and his two children take a family trip to Yellowstone, they accidentally stumble upon a huge research facility in a dried-up lake bed and discover the secret of the impending apocalypse that the government has been hiding. Now forced to take matters into his own hands, Jackson finds himself in a desperate race to save his family and himself as he witnesses earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and all sorts of other disasters Earth holds for humanity.

Still a wonderful film by Emmerich and in my opinion his best so far. A lot of users will probably not agree with that, but as a fan of this genre it is hard for me to miss it. Emmerich makes it a real spectacle again and I love that.
158 minutes is indeed an extreme playing time, but I'm never bored anywhere. Only the first half hour is a bit less because the action there hasn't really started yet. As expected, the introduction is quite long in a film like this. The tempo is also high enough so it is not very boring either. Still, the disasters after the first half hour are what you really look for.
And they are presented in a big way. Emmerich clearly uses up all his budget in a good way and provides a very bombastic and epic spectacle. 2012 is arguably the most spectacular movie I've seen so far. After 30 minutes the action breaks and it goes on at such a nice pace that you will never be bored anywhere.
The effects are not realistic, but they are very nicely put together. Huge images of colossal disasters follow each other in quick succession, each one more impressive than the next. It is special how Emmerich actually turns out bigger and bigger and always goes over himself in this film.
The acting isn't that special, but what do you expect from a cast that barely gets the space to perform a dialogue well. All space is claimed by the images themselves. The sentiment is quite present at times, but remarkably enough, it did touch me a bit.
2012 remains a delicious popcorn movie to watch with a large bowl of sweets. Sometimes it's exciting, other times it's spectacular. In general it rages very nicely and always comes out wonderfully large. In those 158 minutes I was never bored. Incredibly spectacular for a 2009 film. Delicious actually.

Mja Emmerich, give him an untold budget and let the man apocalyptic destroy everything and your evening is filled with popcorn and cola on your lap. A film that will annoy you to death if you take it too seriously. A film that is sometimes nice to watch as a disaster tourist, for once anyway.
Except for Woody, who in itself only has a small role, has little affinity with the characters. To be quite honest, I didn't care much for all of humanity (or at least those who survived). A lot of annoying characters actually and this in the forced contrast that they wanted to make with the scientist who is going to complain at the last minute, so to speak. Especially that moralistic undertone bothered me more than the cat-with-9-lives flight of the limo, camper, airplane and Tupolev.
The classic family, whether or not broken, and with the annoying fifth wheel on it could indeed not be missing. A bit cliché, but hey, that was to be expected. One disaster after another disaster keeps up the pace. Impressive and fake at the same time. Less is more is clearly not in the dictionary of megalomaniac Emmerich.

Disaster movies have always been my guilty pleasure. I'm not a real doomsayer, but the way things are in the current world you notice major changes and not in the right sense. That is why I have always been interested and now even more in apocalyptic endings or eg fantasy worlds in books/movies that have to defeat a great evil by following a certain quest or prophecy. I had never seen 2012 because of the mediocre reviews, but I don't understand it at all.
This is a wonderful disaster movie. Particularly grand, interesting, intense, you name it. All ingredients are there. Cusack is also in particularly good shape here. At times I couldn't hold back my laughter, at other times I thought he was a real hero even though he seems more like an anti-hero. That's what makes the contrast so great.
You can say this is predictable and what not, but who cares. Of course you know that people are going to survive and there is a good chance that it will be so, so and so. But it's about entertainment. A smile and a tear. If you add a decent story, good acting and great special effects, you just have a good movie. In my opinion clearly above average in its genre as well. Great work Emerich.
