this movie has 3 movie elements. and it works.

bit of horror/thriller/ and a who done it.

good story/plot.

the atmosphere in the morgue is scary.

there is also some edgy student-like hunor in it. with a ditto soundtrack.

nice 90s music.

big 3.5 for sure.

Nightwatch (remake) is a thrilling thriller with a dash of horror here and there. An atmosphere is quickly created that the film manages to hold for the entire duration. An atmosphere that is only enhanced by the location where the film mainly takes place. A morgue is a good location in advance, but Ole Bornedal knows how to give it that little bit more. A very strong first part and a somewhat lesser second part is what characterizes Nightwatch.

Ewan McGregor plays well. He is not inferior to Messrs Brolin and Nolte. Soon after the movie Trainspotting, McGregor is allowed to play a student again. His youthful/playful appearance makes him appear credible. Josh Brolin's role isn't really important to the story, but he still manages to give it a right to exist. He plays with verve an arrogant type who thinks to get everything done. Nick Nolte plays solidly. It is clear to see that he is a man who has already starred in quite a few movies. His worn-out appearance reinforces his role. Nice supporting role for Brad Dourif as an arrogant night doctor.

Unfortunately, Nightwatch drops a few stitches as the film progresses. The beginning is simply rock solid. There is mystery surrounding the story and everything is still exciting and intense. After that, there are a number of unbelievable things that don't do the film any good. Also, some decisions are made by the characters that are just plain weird. It begins to lose its power as a result. So a less second part. But still a decent film that luckily came my way. Nice setting, good camera work and good acting. A fine thriller that has some blood-curdling moments, especially in the first part. The film will not be inferior to the original (Nattevagten).

3.5*

Pretty nice, although at one point I was bored with the morgue, and the arrows point so clearly in the direction of one suspect that I automatically started taking the other into account (and rightly so, as it turned out – how many would it have been more original if one of the girlfriends had been the perpetrator?). But hey, it's not all wrong, Brolin is very effective at getting the blood under your nails, and it's always nice to see future "stars" in their younger years. (In that respect, it's curious that John C. Reilly as Nolte's subordinate colleague doesn't get a mention in the ending credits – he may not have been very well known at the time, but his role was quite large, especially when you see that for example, the actors of the creeps in the pub are explicitly mentioned.)
