With a playing time of just under three hours, it can safely be said that The English Patient is quite a sit. I was a bit concerned about that just before the start, although I hadn't checked the reception on the internet beforehand. I was aware that the film had won quite a few Oscars and this in combination with the star cast was enough to make me curious.

I can't say I was bored because the film has so much to offer. First, the plot of the story is interesting. I was curious about Laszlo's story and his character and the numerous events ensured that I did not stray, if at all. He is also excellently portrayed by Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas and Juliette Binoche also managed to convince me effortlessly. The chemistry between Fiennes and both ladies was fine. However, I also thought that the film was a bit too long and that was due to a number of unnecessary sidesteps. I thought the blooming romance between Hana and Kip was superfluous and Willem Dafoe's supporting role was too meaningless for me. If those two elements had been removed, the film would have gained something in time, and therefore also in quality.

I can't really say anything negative about the film. I expected the film to get a bit sentimental every now and then, but because of the grand design, Minghella gets away with that. I am not familiar with the book, but I do think the story is told in a dignified way. The beautiful visuals were supported by a strong score by Gabriel Yared and I was captivated right through to the end. Perhaps some gains could have been made by looking a little more critically at the material that would eventually make it into the film, but all in all I thought it was absolutely worth it.

3.5*
