The film cannot match the original, which perfectly matched the zeitgeist in the post-war years. Not that the world has gotten any better in the meantime, but you still miss a real approach. It has been remade by makers who didn't quite understand what the film was about. So little content, but the film is well made for a blockbuster. In itself not so much difference with films like Independence Day or Armageddon. Keanu Reeves is heavily cast and Jennifer Connelly is not doing badly either. Kathy Bates is the translation of American arrogance. If those aliens had kept an eye on Earth like that, they could have landed outside America. As a viewer, you therefore have more sympathy for Klaatu than the UN. An entertaining film in any case, but beautiful packaging of an empty box.

Film that I think deserves better than the 2.5 or 5 out of 10. Of course there are some clichés in this film, but just find a film that doesn't.

If I compare this film to other Sci Fi films and especially the sub-genre 'aliens visit the earth', think of Starman (1984), Contact (1997), the recent Arrival (2016) and various other films in which aliens live the Earth and the question is whether they come with good or bad intentions, the quality is not that bad.

This film is certainly not the worst in this genre, but it does have the advantage over its predecessor that you can now get a lot more visual experience from the films with CGI than in the past. If a film uses a lot of CGI, you should also view that film in terms of story compared to its classic predecessors. Instead of staring blindly at the visual experience. The CGI was apparently tied to a certain budget, I've seen better.

The story is pretty standard and not super innovative. Earth is visited by aliens and government reacts aggressively with military display of force. We've seen that before, which certainly doesn't make this film corny. More could have been done instead of the necessary bends that this film cut here and there. The personal drama aspect has been fried in thinly. Or what was the purpose of the opening scene versus the rest of the movie. I found Jaden Smith (Will Smith's son) acting quite annoying. Keanu Reeves could handle the alien role quite well I thought, but he does have his somewhat doll-like appearance with him. Nice little roll for John Cleese too.

With a little more depth in the story and better acting, this could have been a good blockbuster as a new ''3rd encounter movie'' in the 4+ rating. But a 2.5 or less I think is really too low. This movie deserves better.

“Have you done your homework?”

“School's canceled on account of the aliens.”

Mediocre. The premise of The Day the Earth Stood Still is quite interesting, but as so often, just an interesting idea isn't enough. Connelly and Reeves try their best, but the material they get is mediocre and not enough to impress. A messy script, boring and insufferable characters who do the stupidest things, and sometimes really bad acting. Earth has never come to an end so dull.
