Spion van Oranje plot
When the Netherlands is threatened by a deranged terrorist, the gay couturier Francois van Vliet seems our only salvation. To his horror, Francois is the terrorist's identical twin brother and is recruited as a secret agent. Clumsy as he is, Francois must take the place of his twin brother and stop the terrorist plans. However, it remains to be seen whether Francois himself does not cause more damage than his brother.

Phew, this was exhausting. You don't expect anything high-quality, but if the film also sits ten levels below that, it is very bad. The makers seem to want to make a Dutch version of Austin Powers, but they completely fail. The script is terrible and especially the timing is really unbelievably bad. In addition, it is only a show by Paul de Leeuw in his double role, the rest of the actors are given the thankless task of taking on a humorless and above all meaningless supporting role. At certain moments the effects were still somewhat nice, until the film comes at the end with the most hideous special effects. With one or perhaps two no more than reasonable moments, Spion van Oranje is especially a very tiring seat.

Timing is everything. In comedies it is essential that the actors maintain a certain tempo in the jokes and thus make the most idiotic situations laugh. A kind of well-composed whole in which the idiocy like a superlative increasingly manages to elicit the laughter from its viewer. If you do that right, you can come up with a lot of nonsense. Just look at Naked Gun with Leslie Nielssen. The biggest flaw with Spion van Oranje is that total lack of correct timing. Jennifer Hoffman and Najib Amhali read their texts staccato, without becoming attuned to each other and thus have a chemistry. Wow, how unbelievable everything that comes out of their mouth sounds. And then the horribly unfunny Paul de Leeuw comes into the story, who should actually carry the film, but especially deeply irritating with his grim characters.

What a bad movie. Amhali saves the film a bit, but for the rest there is just a very low level. De Leeuw plays two annoying roles that are also far from comical. 1.5* for the effort.
