Bride Flight plot

"A forbidden love. An impossible choice. A secret past."

In 1953 a KLM plane wins The Last Great Air Race London - Christchurch (New Zealand). Because dozens of young women are flying along who emigrate and are on their way to meet their fiancées to marry them in New Zealand, this flight is being renamed the 'Wedding Flight'. The women include Marjorie, Margot (Elise Schaap), Esther (Anna Drijver) and Ada (Karina Smulders). The latter is three months pregnant. This pregnancy arose when she wanted to comfort a good acquaintance and now she is on her way to her husband Derk (Micha Hulshof), with whom she is now married - by the gauntlet. The 25-year-old Frank (Waldemar Torenstra) is also flying along. He emigrated because of the climate in the Netherlands and because he could no longer live in the Indies, where he was born. During and after the Second World War he lost his family there to the Japanese camps. So he is not on his way to a loved one. During the trip, he falls in love with Ada, whom he sits next to on the plane. He will always play a part in the lives of all three women.

Bride Flight is a calm, pleasant feature film. The playing time is a bit long and I won't say that no one misses a stitch anywhere, but at the same time this is a fairly unique Dutch film. After all, you don't come across such a grand design very often. The music stands out in a positive way and the costumes, camera work and editing also deserve praise; without a doubt you imagine yourself in the mid-fifties and beyond. The acting itself is also good, although the script is a bit too obvious here and there. The foursome Waldemar Torenstra, Karina Smulders, Elise Schaap and Anna Drijver in particular do a good job. Despite all these positive aspects, the film still goes out a bit like a candle. The story sometimes jumps from one piece to the next, sometimes too fast and sometimes too slow. The fact that several storylines are intertwined does not ultimately produce the desired effect. When the credits appeared, my reaction was: 'not wrong'. Bride Flight basically has enough to offer and is a nice seat, but I can't help feeling that even more could have been here.

3.5*

Bride Flight

Solid film about the nuptial flights in the 1950s from the Netherlands to New Zealand. Many Dutch people wanted to build a new life there, and in Bride Flight we follow a number of characters who build a bond on the run.

The biggest problem with the film is that director Sombogaart wants to put in all kinds of dramatic, romantic and sentimental plot developments, without it making much of an impression. Unbelievable, wooden acting, bad dialogues, etc. It doesn't help at all. Because of the many storylines, everything also feels very volatile and rushed. The older actors get too little to do (although Van Ammelrooy is fantastic), and of the younger actors only Elise Schaap manages to impress.
