A vibrant film about the rise to power of farmers in Mexico. Marlon Brando is perfect in the lead role and Anthony Quinn is at least as good as Zapata's brother, a role for which he received an Oscar. The screenplay is by none other than the great, Pulitzer Prize winner John Steinbeck...

In the end, I was still disappointed. Viva Zapata! also seems to show some clear signs of being outdated. The biggest plus is the role of Marlon Brando, who plays his role convincingly and especially knows how to convey his many character changes to the viewer in a credible way. A person who clearly has the best interests of his people at heart, which also makes him quite sympathetic. The role of Anthony Quinn is also not bad, but I could not find an Oscar-worthy performance in it.
The slow pace was sometimes a bit annoying. These are the moments where nothing special seems to happen and where I was really waiting for a moment of action or something else, but usually it didn't happen. The soundtrack isn't really special either. A simple tune, that reminds me a lot of the music in A Mexican restaurant here, but that is better put together than this soundtrack. The story itself also seems to jump around a bit too much.
A bit of a disappointment, because based on the story I really thought I might like this. However, that turned out not to be the case.

It takes some getting used to Marlon Brando's 'Mexican' painted face, including the wrong moustache, but it must be said that he does not do badly at all in the leading role, as a reluctant leader in the fight against a dictator in Mexico in 1909. The film is not equally captivating everywhere and towards the end it runs out of steam a bit, but director Elia Kazan mainly provides a compelling spectacle, atmospherically portrayed. And the actual ending is beautiful.
