During his time at Monty Python, Terry Gilliam also made surreal animation. Now, with the new computer techniques, he has gone much further, in combination with constructed sets, often in miniature form. When someone steps through the mirror, he ends up in his own fantasy world. This is a reference to Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass. There are also similarities with Faust, ancient folktales, and Greek and Egyptian mythology. The Styx is sailed by modern saints like James Dean and Lady Di.

Parnassus is the Greek mountain where the Muses live. Gradus ad Parnassum is a step-by-step learning program. The itinerant company is an anachronism. Vaudeville and freak shows were popular over a century ago, yet they are performing in modern times. There are flashbacks to a monastery in the Middle Ages, in which a fantasy bird flies around, with colorful plumes like a bird of paradise.

The role of Tony was played by four different actors due to the unexpected death of Heath Ledger. They have made a virtue of necessity, because a man with four faces fits perfectly with this surreal environment and with a hypocritical character. Christopher Plummer has found a new lease of life with those roles of despairing elderly. Lily Cole is a fashion model with brains. With her fiery red hair, chubby cheeks and wide eyes, she is ideal as a bet for a bet with the Devil. Tom Waits likes to play gruesome roles, although his Ol' Nick is a very popular and almost sympathetic version of the Evil Creature. Paloma Faith is better known as a singer, but she was trained as an actress. It feels like a dream with metamorphoses and absurd twists, but thanks to the battle of the souls, there's also an exciting intrigue to tie it all together.

Did little for me. Gilliam is a director that people either love or dislike. In this fairy tale, he tries so hard to seem original that it didn't work. I also thought his Baron Munchhausen film (which in terms of atmosphere is sometimes close to Imaginarium) was a terrible realization of his. Then give me Tim Burton, who can handle these kinds of fantasies much better. Gilliam has been around with the garbage truck again and built his sets as often with a lot of junk (plastic sheeting, old rags, cardboard) ... or so it seems to me. It strikes me that many people still swallow this extremely chaotic story or can make up a story around it. But maybe that's what Gilliam's films are all about: giving your imagination free rein?

Yes, it is true that the fantasy scenes "behind the mirror" are breathtakingly beautiful, imaginative, I would even say the words "triumph of the imagination" ... The Imaginarium must be given its special status by the whole Heath Ledger story around it, but don't let that dust you in your eyes because otherwise this is a lot of hot air as far as I'm concerned.

Strange story that initially reminds me of the old concept of faith and the Bible and above all seems to offer a joking picture of the state of contemporary faith. It's not for nothing that Parny and Mr. Nick for the most souls and at one point Parny mentions twelve disciples. I don't know where Gilliam got the inspiration for the story from, but it seems that with this film he is reinventing the downward spiral of faith. the faith; an outdated and old story, brought by an elderly person who ignores everyone. Meanwhile, the devil is waiting in the wings, smiling.

For a moment, that symbolism makes me look more than intrigued, especially because of the phenomenon of the mirror. Something where there is very little explanation about what the mirror is exactly. Besides looking phenomenally beautiful, the fantasy world is beautiful at times. The scene with the women coming out piece by piece is hilarious, how Mr. Nick walking away on those two little clouds also looks fantastic and the actors try to make the most of it. A slightly veiled accusation that we would rather sell our souls to the devil, let go of moral values, to live a picture imposed by society I think, in addition the message perhaps that the meat is tempting, but come through all the underlying messages not.

The film does not convince, nor does it succeed in its message. So nice to see once, but that's about it.
