The X Files: I Want to Believe plot
"To find the truth, you must believe."
When a group of women are kidnapped in the wintry Virginia landscape, the only clues are the grotesque human remains found along the highway. With the officials looking to make some progress on the case, the dubious visions of a disgraced priest send the police looking in the wrong places. It also leads them to a bizarre, and secret, medical experiment that may have to do with the disappearance of the women. This is really a case for the X-Files. But the FBI closed that paranormal investigation department years ago. Former agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully are asked, against their will, to help in this case.

Lots of Files, little X.
I've never really watched the series in its entirety, didn't think it was bad in the past, but also not so great to watch everything faithfully. Fortunately, the films are separate enough from the series, otherwise I don't think I would have really started it.
But still found it a bit disappointing. The paranormal aspect is very limited in this film, and although Billy Connolly really does get an added value, his character has little screen time. The rest of the film, however, is a fairly run-of-the-mill FBI affair, with a slew of murders and two detectives giving chase.
In the meantime, a lot has happened between Mulder and Scully that I did not immediately know about (children and stuff, the film manages to convey those things smoothly without being too explanatory. The drama between the two could I don't care, but that's part of it of course.
The best thing about this movie was the icy setting. Ideal for these kinds of stories, which makes it all quite manageable. It is certainly not great or great, the paranormal is strongly underrepresented and the plot is not exactly unique or special, but what remains is a fairly entertaining FBI thriller with two well-known TV figures.

With the x files series in mind I started watching this film. What a setback! It reminded me of nothing of the series. There is bad acting, also by Mulder and Scully. The story is not as mysterious as you would hope, messy and the lines not neatly worked out.

Moderate "continuation".
Didn't find the first part that special, but the second part was also very disappointing. Meanwhile, the techniques are 10 years further and you would think that they go less for scanty scenes and more for finishing. Unfortunately, that was a serious disappointment during this sequel, and that was a disappointment.
The main problem is that it just doesn't seem all that interesting. The story has enough supporting attributes to make it a good whole, but the film alternates them restlessly. It is all presented uninterestingly, while the snowy and cold setting is an incentive to have a good time.
I also find the characters very dry and boring figures. Maybe they really came to life in the series, but when I see them here I have serious doubts. Very monotonous and uncomplicated figures who go on talking about everyone, but never really catch on. The secondary characters are also hardly intriguing.
In terms of violence and scary images, it's all a bit staged, but the really frightening parts are relatively short-lived. The advantage is that it is now all a bit less science fiction and a bit more realism, which makes the images a bit easier to hit. I also thought the mysterious part of the story was well thought out and the music is strong.
Nevertheless, a very tiring film. You'd think they'd be a little better able to generate tension, but that's actually only gotten worse. A film that never goes over-the-top but also stays safely within its category. It has decent pieces and above all a decent setting, otherwise a pretty boring seat that had to live on mystery and tension. Simply a disappointment.
