The casino environment is attractively portrayed and the strong performances are the plus of this film, which is somewhat confused in the intrigue about the experiences of the main character, whether or not they have been written down.

Mike Hodges does not reach the level of his much earlier "Get Carter" but is nevertheless creditable with exploring the very intensive profession of croupier and its impact on private life.

“The world breaks everyone, and afterward, many are strong at the broken places”.

Nice crime film with a well-acting cast. Refreshing scenario too. Owen's extremely relaxed voice-over gives the film an almost meditative quality. Good, 3.5*.

Good film in which a writer gets a job as a croupier in a casino. Clive Owen is well cast in the title role and does not disappoint. The film has a fine noir-like tone including a matching voice-over. The actual plot starts a bit late, but the ins and outs within the casino are also fun to watch.
