The remake of the classic film The Wolf Man (1941) by George Waggner is optically a completely different film. The Universal classic was a true studio production that managed to create a beautiful dark Gothic atmosphere thanks to powerful sets and a relentless fog machine. The new version also tries the latter. The means are logically more modern and (as far as I am concerned) a little less convincing.

Director Joe Johnston has significantly more financial scope and uses a much broader setting. And that setting is absolutely successful. Gray swamps and dark winter forests containing a desolate country house with a moody antique interior. All this captured in beautiful image compositions with a subtly dramatic score in the background. Very atmospheric, but unfortunately also visibly edited with the computer here and there. The same goes for the action-packed part of the film that takes place in London and is full of CGI effects. Not bad, but it all looks a bit too slick.

So is the metamorphosis. It's not very impressive. Older films like The Howling (1981) and An American Werewolf in London (1981) better anyway. In those films, the physical pain associated with the change from human to wolf is almost palpable. The Wolfman's CGI doesn't achieve that effect. It's all just a little too smooth. Moreover, the werewolf in this film remains a human with wolf-like features. I'd rather see a wolf with slightly human traits.

The Wolfman is a pleasant film with a good story with even some psychological depth and a fine dark atmosphere. It is also a film that only moderately charmed me with its special effects.

Very good horror & thriller movie! From the start I got into the atmosphere and vibe. The atmosphere was well maintained throughout the film. This includes the right costumes, lighting, environments, et cetera. All the actors played superbly, such as Benicio Del Toro as 'Lawrence Talbot' and Emily Blunt as 'Gwen Conliffe'. Also certainly plus points for the role of Hugo Weaving as in the role of 'Inspector Francis Abberline'. His part was also superbly performed. During the film, the time actually flew by where a healthy mix was applied between calm, busy and scary moments.

Beautiful atmospheric horror film, a modern ode to the old Universal horror films, beautiful locations, good actors/actresses, feels old-fashioned, only downside is that the story is very predictable, but that is difficult to avoid with a remake.
