The films based on Jane Austen's books are far more interesting than this lackluster film about the final years of her life. Although the acting is excellent, it left me completely indifferent.

Tell me now, even if it isn't true

What on Earth would be the point?

It is a pity that it is primarily a TV movie, despite the production value that the BBC once again applies liberally in this case. And what a brilliant cast – Williams in the lead role, and how well it suits her. Scacchi as her older sister, and he fits perfectly too. And how beautiful, almost unrecognizable, Poots is as Fanny. Hugh Bonneville, Tom Hiddleston – pretty much his first serious role.

As a film, it is just a bit too long-winded, too whiny, perhaps for too small an audience. And then I have to admit, with a blush of shame, that I only know Austen's work from the films made based on it, and know absolutely nothing about her own life—even though there is clearly such a parallel there. Maybe I should put a volume on my reading list after all.
