Fairly weak western, in which drama and morality take precedence over adventure and action. It results in a drawn-out, overly romantic film that feels quite long despite the short running time. It also doesn't look like much visually. Some people call Hondo one of Wayne's best, but I really don't know why. The central focus is the aggression of the Apaches against the settlers in the region after a peace truce has been broken, but that also remains a subplot, so it doesn't really matter that much. No, I honestly think this film is one that you should pass up.

Rather average western (shown in 3D at the time!) with John Wayne in fine form as the half-breed title character, who becomes involved in the eternal battle between the American army and the Apache Indians. The story is quite nice and the characters have been given some depth, but visually it is all quite ordinary and it does not want to be really exciting. The action-packed finale was directed by John Ford, who is not listed in the credits.

John Wayne in a 50s western, then you get cowboys vs Indians. A different spirit of the times and a difference with contemporary High Noon for example. Wayne has played better roles, although he fits into characters like Hondo. A kind of lone wolf with a rough shell but a small heart. The other characters are not very special, with the exception of Geraldine Page. The combination of Page and Wayne isn't too bad. And another familiar face (snout) with the dog Sam who, according to the IMDb, is the dog Pal, who plays Lassie in the TV series and some films in the 1940s.
