"An adult fable on power, sex and cooking"
The way to one's heart is through the stomach and that is a positive point for Raimundo Nonato, who arrived in the city by bus and without money. He turns out to have an unexpected talent for cooking and with this he seduces the prostitute Iria. He starts out in a simple bar, but is then hired by the owner of an Italian restaurant, who teaches him all about the trade. Nonato, who is anything but a hero, rises above himself with dishes that he makes with the simplest ingredients.

Just very entertaining. The film follows a double storyline, which is fairly conventional otherwise, but is larded with a lot of witty finds. At the melancholy 'denouement', The Cook (Greenaway) associations soon popped up in my mind, very funny.
Showing compassion for the main character is not difficult; fairly typical underdog who works his way to the top through diligent work and talent, aptly played by Miguel. The film never becomes genius, but it remains frivolous, light-hearted, and now and then even a tad perverse. So it's a nice film, guaranteeing an evening of amusing entertainment.
And it makes you acutely hungry, don't know many films that manage to achieve that. 3.5*.

Simple but effective
Fortunately, in the film you do not know exactly which direction it is going. What is that first scene about? Is it flashbacks or flashforwards...I thought for a moment. The double storyline is not unique, but fits nicely. And then suddenly you know: de gorgonzola! There are many simple, playful tricks that I like..
Catchy
I really can't follow users who don't appreciate the film because and characterize the main character as a creep or find the film too slow. A creep, well, that's for sure, but brilliantly played, right? Pkunk: just about every comedy thrives on repeating the main character's character over and over, right... from Charlie Chaplin to Ace Ventura...? Raimundo brings humor and passion! If you find this film too slow then you have… yes here comes the prejudices… no meat or you simply cannot find yourself in the imaginative, terribly original story, with beautifully chosen closing scenes.
Caught spot
It's wonderful to poke fun at the hero who threatens to perish : the fool actually becomes successful, you feel that it is going wrong...it is going wrong...and...suddenly he is a hero!?
Moreover, it seems to be a parody of - or at least a big nod to - the lower class of Brazil (whores, the exploitation by the restaurant owners), in other words Brazilian self-mockery.
Anyway: this very atmospheric (image and sound) comedy is a film that I had ready for years, but has absolutely not disappointed me!
