A fantastic premise, not fully exploited by the somewhat dull script. The acting of the entire cast, on the other hand, is sublime, as is the very beautiful and moving final scene. A nice surprise.

3.5*

Trumbull had already gained considerable experience in the sci-fi genre with films like Silent Running, as well as as a technical director on 2001 Space Odyssey. However, that did not make him a good director. When the film came out in the early eighties, it was heavily promoted, and many became curious because Natalie Wood had drowned during filming. What we saw was a visually impressive film thanks to the special effects, but that was as far as it went; nowhere in the film was the story clearly portrayed. It was evident that the actors were at a loss with the material and were just acting haphazardly. You can safely call Brainstorm a failed experiment, so why a 2.5? This is due to the beautiful special effects at certain moments and the soundtrack.

A special film. It looks like a tryout to test the latest optical gadgets in the film industry. Here, you get three different aspect ratios processed into one film. Every film connoisseur also knows this film regarding Nathalie Wood's death. The film itself is a thriller, in which scientists invent a machine that records sensory experiences on tape and, once played, transmits the sensory stimuli to other people. There is a risk of permanent brain damage. The cliché of the military purposes of such inventions is used extensively here, which makes the film quite predictable. It is also not Walken's best role. Visually, the film is impressive at times, but it is best watched on a large screen and not on a PC.
