I came across this movie in the top 1000 list of 2015, although it didn't make it to the 2017 list anymore. It seemed like a film noir, like there are others from that time. The opening alone immediately grabs the viewer's attention: the murder of Monte Beragon. . We get a who-dunit story that you as a viewer gradually realize who has gedunit . The gist of this film is how it got to this point.

We look back in time to the life of Mildred Pierce. I won't go into detail here, you just have to watch the movie. We do get to see some striking moments: the death of young Kay, the opening of her own restaurant, the moment after the trial when a conflict arises between mother and daughter, ... Mildred becomes the victim of the 2 people she has most loved: daughter Veda and Monte, which will prove the downfall of her own restaurants. She lost her daughter, went to work to give Veda everything she needed, started her own restaurant chain to earn even more for her, and when the chain went bankrupt because of the debts that Veda (and Monte) incurred, she married that Monte to get the status. worries that brought back Veda. Even if Veda then comes back through that status to hook up with Monte she will later take the blame when Veda ends up killing Monte.. It shows how far you can go as a mother for your own child.

The film is especially wonderful acting with the women first. From the gorgeous Joan Crawford who justly won an Oscar. But also Eve Arden as the girlfriend Ida, Ann Blyth as the materialistic daughter Veda and even Butterfly McQueen, who despite her annoying voice still provides wonderful scenes. A fascinating film with a strong drama. A true classic!

Good film in which a woman with two daughters gets a divorce and tries to get a job. It starts out as a murder mystery (nice shadow play during the opening), but ends up being more of a drama. A good story in which maybe a little too much happened (in that respect I thought the later miniseries worked just a bit better). Beautifully told and excellent acting by the entire cast. Easily 3.5 stars.

Great film noir that we can expect soon without a doubt in the top 250 of MM. The film has a nice build-up that starts with the murder of Mildred Pierce's second husband, Mr Monte Beragon. Who the perpetrator is, of course, is not shown, but what follows, is based on the interrogation by the police via a flashback. Every now and then we return to the present, but from then on everything proceeds quite chronologically.

Central - how could it be otherwise - Mildred Pierce, a typical housewife who puts her family first. Her marriage to her first husband is broken, partly because of different parenting principles and because of financial problems by and with her husband.

She has to provide for her own income and in no time works herself up as a waitress to become the owner of her own business. The sky is the limit it seems, for herself, but mainly to support her daughter Vera. She is a selfish spoiled brad who is only interested in money and appearance. Eventually her hormones start to play up too.

One of the strongest assets of the film is the beautiful cohesion between the characters. Everything is convincingly presented by excellent acting, but also good interpretation of the characters. Crawford herself leads the way, of course, who puts down an intense rendition of her character Mildred. But Ann Blyth as a spoiled 17-year-old is also a femme fatale to be proud of. Finally, the supporting roles of the various men as the secretary are of a high level with good dialogues and now and then some sarcasm.

Finally, a well-supported soundtrack by Max Steiner and a top cinematic approach. Mildred Pierce is a masterpiece. Strong women dominate the film, the men, on the other hand, are docile lambs. It certainly didn't do Joan Crawford any harm.
