L'Ennemi Public N° 1 plot

The story about Jacques Mesrine, public enemy number 1 in France in the 1970s. He was known for his quirky disguises and as a womanizer, but first and foremost for daring bank robberies, lucrative kidnappings and prison breaks. For twenty years he was a tormentor to the French police, despite their getting closer and closer to him. This film is the sequel of l'Instinct de Mort.

The cheerful crooks from the previous part take on a gloomy tail here when it shows the more destructive side of Mesrine. More of the same, but also an extra layer that powerfully closes this very entertaining diptych.

Anyway, it was an excellent move by Jean-François Richet to split the story of the infamous Jacques Mesrine into two parts and that for the full four hours. The second part is full of smashing action full of brutal violence. A film that really never bores.

At times great how Mesrine behaves. Obviously not his violent actions, but at times he is half a pop star. He plays the media and public opinion in such a way that he is almost adored. He is very narcissistic and gets a kick out of being inseparable from the media. He is proud of his title of "national enemy number 1". His performance in court was therefore hilarious. But he is also difficult to handle criticism. That one journalist knew that and the rest of France with him.

I also noticed how bad the police pissed him off. He was put down at the end, but there were enough moments before that to get things done. The cat-and-mouse game with the judiciary was therefore entertaining. The many disguises were usually successful, but sometimes you had the impression that the police really followed the facts and just kept muddling on.

Recommended within the crime genre. Not for the sensitive souls, but quite a hard raw film by one of the biggest French criminals after the interwar period.

Honestly, haven't seen such a good crime film in ages and then we're talking about the two together. Strange we didn't notice this gem before!

Part 1 was made in such a way that we definitely wanted to see part 2 after it and we succeeded (the purchase) within two days. Part 2 is more of the action while part 1 introduces you more to the rather adolescent and violent pranks of Jacques Mesrine who gradually discovers that the world has more to offer him than a job as model making, money rolling faster his way if he picks it up himself. And you can only pick up at banks, if you have a negative bank balance you can do that with the help of a gun or a weapon similar to it.

In this 2nd part we see Jacques Mesrine with supporters in Canada, Great Britain and indeed in France.

We also give an 8 for this part of the film.
