I like a nice screwball comedy from time to time, and last night it was My Man Godfrey's turn. Fortunately, the term fun certainly applies here. My Man Godfrey puts the wealthier social class on display here, by presenting a wealthy family as a bunch of people, one even weirder than the other.

The actors in particular are on a roll. Powell, Lombard and Brady certainly deserve kudos. However, I especially liked Eugene Pallette, as the father with the sharp cynical remarks, in a very nice way. The first half is clearly the best. It is sharp, often a lot of fun and because of the high tempo it doesn't get boring for a second. In the second half, the level drops slightly. The jokes are sometimes a little less sharp and there seems to be a bit too forced a search fora happy ending. Still, it's fun to watch, although it ultimately costs the film half a point in the final bill .

Incidentally, I do not immediately welcome the idea, but given the subject matter, a remake can be made quite easily, which will appeal to a lot of people. The subject of My Man Godfrey is quite timeless.

3.5*

Nice film in which the daughter of a rich family appoints a homeless person as the new butler. In itself a nice story where the humor is also fun for the most part, but it is mainly the dialogues that are often funny. The role of Carole Lombard is quite exaggerated and sometimes annoying.

Unfortunately this one doesn't work for me. That family is crazy, but I couldn't really laugh about it. Perhaps William Powell is just a bit stiff for my taste. I would have preferred Jerry Lewis, WC Fields or Piet Bambergen. A few nice scenes, but also too much screaming. I also didn't find dialogues bright enough. Oscar nomination as best male support actor for Mischa Auer as the protégé of the lady of the house.
