The Blair Witch Project is not an easy movie to make a sequel to. They saw that when Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows came out. In 2016 it might have been a little easier, because then there would be enough time in between to secretly make a soft reboot of your sequel. Kind of like The Thing was a prequel in 2011, but also felt a bit reboot-ish at the same time. The danger of that is that it can feel like a repetition exercise. And indeed, Blair Witch certainly feels like a rerun of The Blair Witch Project. Once again, teens go into the woods with cameras, get lost and encounter strange things. Some minor technical updates have been made; for example, everyone wears a small camera on their head, someone has an SLR and there is also a drone. But technically aside, Blair Witch is doing the same thing as The Blair Witch Project 17 years earlier; found footage horror in a dark forest.

Provided; Blair Witch is far from the best we know of found footage movies. Cannibal Holocaust was the first, The Blair Witch Project popularized it. Subsequently, many found footage films appeared, often quite poor, but sometimes with enormous outliers such as [REC] or Cloverfield. Blair Witch is definitely not that good, but the film is still not badly done. Because the movie is still more effective in its scares than a lot of the standard horror movies we get today. A movie like Slender Man - the biggest failure of 2018 so far - should have been just this; an efficient, simple horror with a nice scary atmosphere. Especially around the end with the sequences in the house and the tunnel under the ground the film gets genuinely exciting here and there. I understand the critics that the film is more of a repeat of the previous film and does not bring much new, but in terms of execution Blair Witch is really not that bad.

Benefit of the doubt, 3.5 stars.

Not good, and not even exciting. Too much craziness is quickly taken out of the closet for that, so that any form of tension build-up disappears and there remains a lot of noise and a lot of screaming. Very poorly acted and visually poor. But all in all, the film actually looks pretty easy, so I'm not going for the lowest. 1.5*.
