Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 plot

"Evil Doesn't Die."

Four youngsters have signed up with handy Jeff Patterson for a tour of the Black Hills forests around Burkittsville. Despite his dubious reputation, his company is a gap in the market. They set up camp near the dilapidated house that once belonged to child killer Rustin Parr, and where the students' cameras and film cans have been recovered. A night with far-reaching consequences. Dark hours, whose bizarre symbols are carved into their skin. However, none of them can remember anything about the events the next morning. In Jeff's old warehouse on the outskirts of Burkittsville, they try to reconstruct this night.

Just a year after The Blair Witch Project, a sequel was pooped out to hitch a ride. The faster the better, the studio thought. Documentary maker Joe Berlinger was cited to give the second film a documentary feel as well, but at the same time not to do the same as the original. Berlinger had all kinds of ideas - he wanted to make a kind of Jacobs Ladder meets Audition - but a lot of those ideas didn't come through in this film; the studio's meddling - and very bad choices - was simply too great. Whether Berlinger's version would have made a good film remains to be seen, but the end product that ultimately resulted in this Blair Witch 2 - or Book of Shadows, a title that refers to Dirk as shit - is in any case one very big, stinking turd .

The studio is responsible, among other things, for opening the film with a whole bucket of flashbacks. It's unbelievable how confused a film can start, with the most diverse sequences to which no strings can be attached. During the film there are also all kinds of quick cuts in the editing, a trick that was used in many horror films in the late 90s. And of course with a soundtrack full of hard rock and metal songs, because young people think that's cool. I understand that they want to do something different than repeat the original, but Blair Witch 2 is really far removed from the first film in terms of tone and feel. The characters are unbelievable and dull, all the dialogue feels very 'written' and the film's attempts to be scary are laughable. Berlinger may be good at making documentaries, but he fails miserably in putting it into something scary. There is actually no area where Blair Witch 2 succeeds. And not only if you put it next to a creative and effective product like The Blair Witch Project, this is and remains very bad as a standalone horror film.

1 star.

I also remember that I liked part 2 much better than part 1, but need to watch it again to make a more recent judgment

Mediocre.

Blair Witch 2 is a rather odd addition to the series, a film that has actually been given the completely wrong approach that clearly didn't sit well with audiences. The first part is apparently fake in this movie, and is only used as a reference point. Furthermore, Berlinger also takes a completely different tack here as a film.

The found-footage content of the first film is left behind, this is a very normally set up horror film with a mysterious touch to it, just not so well executed. The advantage this film has is that it is very entertaining and makes an attempt to give the characters quirkiness, but otherwise Berlinger clearly had a lot to learn here.

Cinematographically a somewhat variable film. The orange glow of some scenes is stylish, and the sequence in which the teenagers look back at what happened in that forest is quite successful. Furthermore, slow motion is used in an abominable way, the camera work is rather mediocre and the acting is unconvincing. The cast works with might and main to play well, but the awful dialogue clearly gets in the way too much.

The movie is full of fun, it was very easy to watch and it doesn't take long. It is, however, very ridiculous and the form of tension that the first part had in its favor is completely gone. Berlinger makes a very clunky film that lacks all subtlety and blows a little too hard. This way you have a smooth film, but not a film that leaves a lasting impression.

The ending also throws the rest of the film a bit, but the film can forgive that thanks to a smooth approach. The potential for the film was there, I just think that the final style of the film got in the way of a good result. It is a very variable film, but mainly towards the negative side against which the positive points cannot outweigh. Unfortunately.
