Dorian runs away from his snobbish adoptive parents and goes to work in a swimming paradise. There he meets Gracie. To earn money, they start a courier service for the sale of marijuana.

Emotions run high a few times in this dramatic character study. In one of the few times she acts alongside her real mother, Susan Sarandon, Eva Amurri shows that she has more to offer than just a spectacular body. The young Willa Holland is also doing a good job, but it is primarily Anton Yelchin who impresses, searching for his identity. A fine drama with well-executed acting.

With Blue Crush (2002), Into the Blue (2005), and Turistas (2006), John Stockwell made films in which ladies frolic very prominently in tiny bikinis. It is therefore surprising that in Middle of Nowhere, the bikini occupies a much less prominent place. The film is a pleasant coming-of-age drama that deals with the value of friendship and growing up in a small town. Fortunately, the film is not entirely devoid of ladies in bikinis. Part of the film takes place in the swimming pool where protagonist Grace (Eva Amurri) has a summer job.

Eva Amurri is the daughter of Susan Sarandon, who also stars and, very fittingly, plays the role of her mother in the film. Amurri delivers a good performance, subtly fighting out an inner conflict due to a second summer job as a drug courier. Her co-star is Anton Yelchin, who portrays a character displaying a mischievous charm that quickly makes you forget he is, in fact, a drug dealer. Less space is made for Sarandon's acting talent in the story, but in the scenes where she is present, she makes an impression. Middle of Nowhere boasts an excellent cast.

An excellent film, too. The film tells an enjoyable holiday story and alternates funny and dramatic moments. The dialogue is fun and witty, containing fine quirky remarks and funny one-liners here and there. The camerawork is also good. Predominantly static shots in which the characters are prominently placed. Little paintings. Middle of Nowhere is a fine film.
