Strong movie.

Laced with clichés, but Cornwell fortunately knows how to do something with it. He puts down an atmospheric horror and comes out with some very strong scenes. Is sometimes slowed down by family drama (drunk father) and Christian posturing, but these parts are relatively short so that the momentum, admittedly, remains in place after a long build-up.

3.5*

I thought it was a good movie. You need a strong stomach. Good effects, well filmed, good acting. Plot could have been better but certainly not weak. Some moments predictable, others not at all. Father gets the least role in my opinion. It shows what the relationship is in the family, but does not go much further than that and what this causes emotionally. But this is also not necessary for the plot to do its job. Definitely a movie in which things are heavily overdramatised. But personally I like that. Scares in moderation and well dosed. Definitely looked through my fingers a few times instead of normal. A film that, after watching it, gives you the feeling that the story has ended. Personally, I would have liked it if the mother had returned as an interviewee in the interview at the beginning. Personally I'm glad Jonah didn't say 'thank you', just acted out.

Yes delicious!

Strangely enough to my surprise, because on paper (“inexplicable things are happening in the house”) and also together with the first calm half hour, it does not immediately reveal what an atmospheric film this is. Well, the story won't blow you away, but there are a number of things that keep this haunted house variant firmly afloat.

The first is mainly the script, which interweaves the storyline of the family with the history of the house at a confident pace. That family feels like a real family, which, given the dramaturgical touches (son with cancer, lack of money, moving house) is not self-evident in these kinds of films.

Fine acting, credible dialogues and those short little moments in which characters do not allow their actions and reactions to be guided by clichés, but just react differently. Often gives the many jumpscares a fresh edge, so that the tension remains intact; you rarely feel cheated by it.

The exciting scenes are also very heavily edited (so that tension quickly builds up) and highlights are held just longer than usual. Not always consistent in style but constant with the atmosphere intact.

The ending feels a bit messy, but otherwise this is an above-average haunted house, with a sympathetic story and pleasantly grim atmosphere. 4*
