De Held plot

Sara Silverstein has never experienced violence, and now that she's just returned from LA, she wants to keep it that way. It is therefore rather against her will that her adventurous son enlists in the US Marines. She is of little help to her husband and there is no time to change his mind. After an afternoon of rowing, she comes face to face with a rapist and not much later her daughter is violently mugged at night. Could this threat have anything to do with her father's undisclosed wartime history? Secrets must be unraveled, but a family must also be kept together. Is Sara brave enough to push herself to the limit?

Menno Meyjes completely misses the mark in this dramatic, highly unbalanced psychological drama. The film opens with a beautifully filmed dinner scene, a continuous shot in which the camera moves fluidly through the house. But this stunt serves no purpose, and the acting during this shot is uneven. Hendrickx is one of the best actresses working today, but here you get the impression that Meyjes has mostly included her worst takes. The scene in which she tries to convince her son not to become a Marine in the US Army is beneath her dignity.
The film is sloppily edited and at times impossible to make heads or tails of. Daan Schuurmans's first appearance is promising, but any menace his imposing villain possesses on paper is lost because he's forced to play it "under the radar." Compare the film's subdued sexual assault scene to the one between Robert Mitchum and Polly Bergen in Cape Fear (1962) and you'll understand why this film just won't work. Even the big final reveal is vague and unsatisfying. Van Huet holds his own in this debacle, but hopefully Hendrickx and Schuurmans can recover from this dark chapter in their acting careers.

Daan Schuurmans, Monique Hendrikx, Fedja van Huet... all actors I usually appreciate. But man, what a dreadful film. I went to Moviemeter specifically to see if anyone else could still appreciate it. It never gets exciting, the story is haphazardly constructed, and the acting remains truly mediocre. Of course, that also has to do with the dull dialogue. There's little that makes you empathize with the main characters. Even the suspenseful scenes didn't do anything for me. Too bad, I hope next time will be better!

What a waste of talent and a shame that Courbois's last film had to be this vehicle. Nothing about this film is credible, not the script, not the acting, and certainly not the story, which is fragmented and utterly implausible. I'm not referring to any post-WWII aftermath; such a thing might well have happened. But the way the story builds to a climax is highly implausible. Ask yourself these questions: Would a Marine ceremony in America be so stiff and amateurish? Would an American Marine, even a Dutchman, be allowed to travel to the Netherlands briefly after receiving his dispatch orders, and in uniform no less? Grandpa fantasized wildly about his role in the war; he was eventually arrested, but—and that might just be me because my attention lapsed—I haven't been able to find out how he ultimately survived the war. And I could go on.

In my opinion, this is a classic example of a Dutch production where the creators overdid their job. The cast also didn't know which direction to take the story and just did whatever they wanted.
No, I'm definitely never going to watch this again.
