Every now and then I pick up something from African cinema. This time it is the film debut of Ousmane Sembene, one of the greatest African directors, of whom I also saw the nice Xala.

This Black Girl was slightly better. It is a beautiful black-and-white shot film, which is very simple and minimalist in design. The story is admittedly quite strong and the way it is delivered works quite well. It is a pretty intense event, which is presented to the viewer in a fairly subtle way. The acting performances are not bad. That is quite special here, because the cast had little or no acting experience and certainly not the most important players.

So pretty good. The minimalism works well and the black and white is a nice contrast. I would like to see more of Sembene. I am especially curious what he still had to offer in his later films, when he now had more experience.

3.5*

Sembene's directorial debut is jet black, in several senses of the word. This simple, short film tells a poignant story about a Senegalese nanny who ends up in a downward spiral in a new, white environment, mainly due to the treatment she receives from her employer. Downsides, I think, is that Diouana keeps her commentary completely to herself through a voice-over and that the growing conflict is only highlighted one-sidedly.

My second Sembene after seeing the wonderful Moolaadé (2004) is more interesting than good. I am curious about his other works.

The Senegalese director Ousmane Dembène made his first longer film with 'La Noire De...' in 1965, which is sometimes regarded as the first African feature film made south of the Sahara. The story jumps back and forth in time and location between Dakar in Senegal and Antibes in France, where protagonist Mbissine Thérèse Diop tries her (un)luck as an au pair. With a playing time of less than an hour, this is a small masterpiece
