Geomeun Jip plot

"Where lies the darkest secret."

Insurance agent Jun-oh gets a call one day from an unknown person who wants to know if the insurance pays out in case of suicide. A few days later Jun-oh is invited to visit an insured in person. Jun-oh is received there by a moody man, who asks Jun-oh to continue to his son's room. When the door is opened, he sees the son hanging dead by a rope. The next day the father comes to Jun-oh's office and asks about the insurance money. Jun-oh thinks it's suspicious and slows things down by saying that the coroner's report must first be received. The father keeps inquiring about the status for several days in a row until Jun-oh thinks it's enough and decides to pay out the insurance money to get rid of the man and close the case.

Black House was better than expected on all sides. For a while I had seen too many Asian horror films, some very good, some less so, but mainly a large number that are quite difficult to understand. And that has often been a problem for us Westerners with Asian films, which is why I waited a while before viewing the still considerable number of Asian films in my collection.

This South Korean thriller was better than expected on all sides. A film that is compared to Saw, and actually that doesn't seem to be the case for the first hour, even longer. Because only the last few minutes Black House is a true horror film. But does that make Black House boring? No.

Black House is in fact a very strong thriller that is above all very entertaining, because I was not bored for a moment and the film somehow manages to put the viewer in the middle of it, you think along, as it were, while it is not really something that a master detective should come and see.

The last fifteen minutes / half an hour of the film is lurid and is indeed reminiscent of Saw at times. The necessary gore is present and the setting is great in the house. The ending of Black House is fantastic and I was never bored at all, 4 big stars.

Nice film, although there could have been more, because it goes on a bit too long at the end.

It all starts quite quietly, creating a fairly strong atmosphere. The script is good and I had never seen anything like it before. The tension arc is not yet high, but will set up considerably in the second half. Because the Koreans are not afraid to portray things explicitly, it also looks good in terms of gore.

The acting is also fine, although the protagonist is a bit too much of a wimp at times, which made it a bit difficult to live with at times. Towards the end, everything goes smoothly at some point and it also becomes very exciting. That the woman comes out of the fire completely unscathed, however, I thought was a plot twist too much. Finishing before that would have been really perfect, but this too unbelievable twist makes me take at least half off the score.

Quite a pity, because it is otherwise a fascinating whole that does not bore you for a second and has an interesting subject that is well developed, although the film goes on for ten minutes too long.

Quite a nice thriller horror from South Korea in which an insurance agent has to deal with a psychopath. Exciting and atmospheric, the Koreans know what to do with that. Good build-up and reasonably strong until more than three-quarters of the film. The ending was again that little bit over the top and exaggerated, as so often.

It never ceases to amaze me that a half-crippled woman can provide such dominance or such strong resistance. And not in one scene, but in several scenes. And as so often in such films, they often have 2 to 3 lives.

A little gore here and there, but all in all it's not too bad. Saw states? Well, a light version anyway. I found that with the key rather laughable than really dirty. But overall a good approach.
