Film feels like a warm bed where you want to stay a little longer. Incredibly clever how Koreeda addresses heavily loaded themes and keeps them light-hearted. No screaming and finger-pointing characters. His motto almost seems to be, less is better! Minimalist Contemporary Drama at its best.

There is a certain pattern in the director's working method, despite the fact that this is my second acquaintance and I may be making a wrong assumption. The story is slowly built up without any memorable event taking place. It is therefore secondary because Koreeda attaches more importance to the characters. His love for each of them is reflected in the script and on the silver screen. They are also played very well by everyone. Hiroshi Abe as Ryota, however, plays a brilliant role. A gloomy figure on the surface, but gradually gains my sympathy.

The least I can do after so much praise is to spell his name correctly. There, the promise stands and will now take effect. Finally, a question for a true connoisseur, where does Kore-Eda's fascination for food come from or was that a coincidence in his last two films. Please give me a Kore-Eda answer, so without venom or sarcasm please......

Fine.

But as often Koreeda goes up and down a bit and this After the Storm is again a small downward movement of the director. Not that it is a bad film, not at all, but the emphasis here is a bit too much on the characters themselves, while I would like to see a bit more space and atmosphere in Koreeda's films.

Hiroshi Abe does a good job, but for me it is really Kirin Kiki who steals the show. Koreeda always has great grannies in his films, Kiki does that tradition justice. Maki and the boy are also nice, but it is clearly about the other two characters.

Only I found the drama and the conversations between the characters demanding a bit too much attention. The nice thing about Umimachi Diary was that relaxed, summery, nothing-is-going-on atmosphere, there is a bit too little of that here. It is all a bit too drama-driven and that drama is just not special or different enough to keep me completely captivated for 2 hours.

But Koreeda is a good director and the film still has enough beautiful moments. Certainly a worthy film within Koreeda's oeuvre, I just prefer to see him make more casual dramas. In any case, I'm not worried, soon there will be another real gem from the hand of this man.

3.5*

Beautiful film to immerse yourself in. Ryota has gone astray after his successful novel. He has put his contacts with his mother, his wife and his son on the line.

When he unexpectedly gets the chance to change that, the film takes on a bigger

power and you will be on the edge of your cinema seat.

Will he become who he is? For his mother, grandmother, for his son (great role!) life is simple.

'Let things go and enjoy what is.'

A film that will stay with you.
