Father-son relationship is central to this film, which spans two periods in the family's life.
A classic and often seen method, which is not so bad here.
Actually, the psychological impact dominates this film, the mutual relationships and the processing of what used to be and what should or could be now. That's what it's about and that's what the viewer has to deal with. I certainly do not dare to say that the character drawing is excellent. However, the film can boast of a strong cast.
The character that the Dafoe plays seems very extreme to me.

Beautifully understated drama with an excellent Reynolds. Not too heavy, comical at the right moments, but with a possibly recognizable theme. Images are beautiful, especially the cornfield, and the music is beautiful. It's a shame the movie isn't a bit longer.

Fireflies in the Garden
Fair family drama. Nice to see Ryan Reynolds in this kind of role, and he's doing well. The other actors are also doing well, in a film with a lot of pent up emotions and mutual quarrels that are never finished. That always boils over in the end, something that strangely enough does not (or almost not) happen in Fireflies in the Garden. Everyone deals with the death of a family member in a different way, of course, but it does make for a somewhat flat and sometimes emotionless film. The mutual relations (especially between Reynolds and Watson/Panettiere) also remain somewhat vague. But otherwise this is a decent film with excellent acting.
