Bandidos (1967)

Much better than the majority of spaghetti westerns.

Much better than (to name just one) A Fistful of Dollars.

(Incidentally, director Massimo Dallamano was involved as Director of Photography in that film and in For A Few Dollars More)

The story is good, with some nice touches, and the lead actors are solid.

Unfortunately, there are also some spaghetti-specific downsides, but they are manageable.

The body count is extremely high.

Good camerawork and decent music.

This deserves more recognition.

The enormous success of the first Leone westerns led to an explosively increasing number of Spaghetti westerns. The peak was in 1966 and 1967, when almost one was released a week in Italy, and many of them also found their way abroad (in Europe).

The western contains a lot of action and the pace is quite high. It starts immediately with a well-staged train robbery that will define the rest of the film. Like many spaghetti westerns (especially the earlier ones), it is primarily a revenge film. The film has a brisk pace. The film looks good. Dellamano would later make the cult classic Solange. This would remain his only western.
