When Spielberg has to direct a romantic/dramatic scene, it strikes me that he doesn't do much of it, usually it's those sugary over the top performances. That's a shame with this movie because it's a really good movie otherwise. The cast is in great shape and the action scenes are great. Spielberg has therefore been entrusted with that action. Hepburn's last role, though small, was very memorable. It's a shame that there were those annoying over-the-top scenes, because they completely invalidate the film.

Revised on Blu-ray. A somewhat lesser Spielberg, that's for sure, but the film is charming and entertaining. The film also benefits from a great cast and the scenes with the fire-fighting planes are quite impressive. Where it sporadically goes wrong is with the humor, which is very bland especially in the beginning of the film, and the sweet approach of certain scenes. Nevertheless, it all looks beautiful, with atmospheric camera work and a suitably romantic glow over everything. The film also gains more and more emotional power as it progresses.

As has been said before, this is not Spielberg's best film. This is mainly due to the fact that the film is not really clear in what it wants to be. In short, I think Dreyfuss's presence after he's passed is a bit redundant. It doesn't add much and actually serves as a mechanism to tell her character how to process her grief and get on with her life. It's not so bad, but it does mean that I find the processing of Hunter's character a bit less present in the film and it actually keeps bubbling on the surface. Also, a potentially moving supporting role from Audrey Hepburn's last film role doesn't quite come out well in this way.

Spielberg would not be Spielberg if there is a light undertone in the film and there is also something to experience. I had no problems at all with this and the 2 hours flew by like a firefighter. He just really should have focused on one or the other as far as I'm concerned. And not a mix of something supernatural and the grieving process.

3.0*
