After seeing High Plains Drifter, I expected a lot from Joe Kidd. Unfortunately, this movie doesn't live up to that for me. I thought Eastwood played a little less this time, but he still plays properly. I found Duvall disappointing and so in terms of characters I was a bit disappointed to begin with. The story itself about a former bounty hunter who goes hunting again I found a bit on the mediocre side. Fortunately it does contain some entertaining scenes like when Joe Kidd opens that hatch and one of the men from Harlan falls through it was quite funny . At the end a fine scene with the train entering the saloon but in between too much average.

A John Sturges movie. One of his last and not his best. The film lasts less than 90 minutes and is a bit disappointing.

In view of the resounding names, expectations for this western were higher. A western directed by John Sturges from a script by Elmore Leonard, based on a book by Louis L'Amour. Starring Clint Eastwood. And other lead roles for Robert Duvall and John Saxon. Yes, that sounds.

Instead of a noble, taciturn hero, Eastwood here is an agitated, taciturn anti-hero, who doesn't care about moral issues, but rather deviously goes to great lengths to stay out of any conflict situation. That takes some getting used to, but the dynamics that the combination of the three characters generates makes up for a lot. Duvall plays an unpleasant sadist. Saxon is a man with an honorable mission who uses ruthless means to achieve his goal. And luckily Eastwood still pulls his gun at the right time.

The story in which they appear is not much. The short playing time provides tempo and keeps the spirit up. Exciting moment here. Shooting there. The gentlemen do it all very entertainingly. The viewer gets less pleasure from the women. The female roles are poorly developed and matter little. Their characters are therefore treated with little respect due to the male input. And as a manipulated viewer, I easily went along with that.

Joe Kidd is not a sensational western. In the end, however, the film does offer Eastwood ample opportunity to play the cool hero. Oh, that's what I do it for.

One of Eastwood's lesser-known films, and perhaps rightly so - because it was made somewhat easy-going and with quite a few weaknesses. I'll just mention the not too strong story, the somewhat mediocre actors apart from Clint himself (Duvall is also not at his best), the occasionally a bit too fake-looking locations - at least, the ones where you can see that they are for the movie are built. The landscapes and the village of the Mexicans are fine, and the cameraman really knows what he is doing.

And yes, so does Clint, of course. Although it sometimes comes across as if he is still somewhat in his Dirty Harry role - the diction is now and then exactly that of the film's denouement. This one instead has the somewhat slapstick-esque entrance of Clint in the shoot-out before the end. Fun, but not very memorable, and in retrospect perhaps the weakest point of the entire film.
