Grace Is Gone plot

"A story about one fathers love and courage"

Stanley Phillips (John Cusack) had his whole life mapped out. He would serve his country and was destined for a military career. That dream came to an abrupt end when it turned out that his eyes weren't good enough. Now he stands behind the counter in a convenience store while his wife Grace fights as a sergeant in Iraq. In her absence, Stanley is tasked with raising their two daughters, 8-year-old Dawn and 12-year-old Heidi. However, he has a hard time building an affectionate relationship with them and the girls miss their mother terribly. Suddenly disaster strikes: Grace is killed in an attack. Stanley decides not to say anything to the girls for the time being and spontaneously decides to go on a 'road trip'.

Nice but simple drama. I especially liked Shelan O'Keefe in this movie. The ending is pretty nice.

Nice movie. It's just a pity that you immediately fall into the story, as soon as the film starts Grace has died, while we hardly (not actually) know the characters, let alone that we have already built up some feeling with them. We don't get the time for that and that's a bit of a shame, because you have to sprint to get into the story. With a duration of 85 minutes, they could have easily added an extra 10 minutes to work things out a bit better.

The much-praised John Cusack here didn't really convince me, plays okay but not more than that. This also applies to the girls, although I found the oldest playing the most convincing. The script is also okay, but could have been a bit more depth.

As far as I'm concerned, this is a film that is easy to watch and also has the potential to be a really good film, but it just lacks the dots. More than 3*.

In terms of title, I thought beforehand that this might be something like After Lucía (2012), but this one is a lot lighter and less intense than [ i]After Lucia[/i]. It also reminded me a bit of Caos Calmo (2008), although I also think that this is the better film. Grace Is Gone is a bit simpler and more straightforward in structure than those two films.

Surprised (though times change...) to see married women with children sent to Iraq and it took some getting used to the grief-stricken way of the stay-at-home husband, but afterwards nothing but praise, especially the disarmed, youthful simplicity and naturalness of both children. Real behavior of a 12-year-old and an 8-year-old (Americans are unsurpassed masters in this) with tears at the end. Good movie.
