The tension builds up very high. About 20 minutes are spent stressing that the room is dangerous and that this and that happened. So now you want to know what's so mysterious about it.

Once in the room, it all falls apart. A nice find here and there indeed, but a lot of nonsense and little tension.

revised. This film adaptation of a short story by Stephen King is (obviously) reminiscent of The Shining, although the tone is a bit more corny, especially in the beginning. However, the build-up is exciting and intriguing, with a fine Cusack in the lead role. His slowly escalating behavior is cleverly played. The second half is a bit messy, but there are enough scary and inventive moments to keep things on track. At least this time I liked the movie better than I remembered.

Interesting premise, boring execution. With a nice concept like this you can go much crazier and visually more extreme; now it all stays within the lines and by the book. Sure, there's some fun stuff in it, some scenes are pretty good (in the air shaft, for example, or the shuffling on the ledge on the way to the other window), but it's not groundbreaking material, and you've seen it before. The background story with the daughter is also standard. John Cusack plays a bit worn out and dull, but manages to convince at times (especially when he is going crazy). The bit part of Jackson is too short to really impress, but still fun in itself. In the end, it's all not really bad; there is simply too little atmosphere, tension and (visual) originality in it. I cannot give higher than 2.5*.
