Waterloo Bridge plot

Myra Deuville is so short on cash that she can only pay her rent by working as a "companion girl" for soldiers she picks up at Waterloo Bridge. When she meets the naive but charming Canadian Roy, he immediately falls in love with her and asks her to marry him before he goes to the front. Myra hesitates, but that doesn't stop Roy from proposing a ruse to his family. Meanwhile, Myra's secret becomes an increasing burden.

Mae Clarke was instantly “hot” after James Cagney shoved half a grapefruit in her face in Public Enemy (1931), a famous scene that can be found in virtually every history of Hollywood. Universal wanted to capitalize on Clarke’s sudden fame as quickly as possible and did so by giving her the lead role in the film adaptation of Robert Sherwood’s play about a down-on-her-luck show dancer.

Mae Clarke has granted the studio exactly what she wanted, as she delivers an excellent performance in this film. It is a pity that her co-star Kent Douglass looks more like a good choirboy than a soldier who could be sent back to the front at any moment. His limited facial expressions and theatrical performance do the film no favors, but Mae Clarke's acting and the compelling story ensure that this film still deserves a solid passing grade.

The 1940 remake with Robert Taylor and Vivien Leigh may have the same characters and backgrounds, but it is actually a very different film that I can certainly recommend.

Fine film that benefits heavily from the fact that it is pre-code. So she remains a prostitute and the ending is not happy. Both Douglass and Clarke in particular are such revelations that it is truly striking they aren't stars. The fact that Douglass is almost a boy actually helps. In many films, all soldiers are tough; that isn't realistic. Another fine example of backlot here as well. I can certainly appreciate its beauty. I find the Waterloo Bridge set very beautiful.

Bette Davis is the sister of and doesn't really make much of an impression. She is not the reason why this film should be watched.
