A piece of history.

I used to see all 6 of them, but that's long before my MM time. I used to think they were funny, but then it was already pretty wrong. That's why I never really bothered to watch them again. But when I first saw this one on Netflix, it was easy prey.

Police Academy is a two-speed movie. The first hour is quite fun and smooth, however when you switch to action for the last half hour it deteriorates fairly quickly. Not that the humor is so brilliant that it is sorely missed, it's more that the action scenes aren't terribly exciting.

A messy mess that comes together in training to become a police officer. A character or 4 is developed a bit more, the rest is only included for a few running gags and side jokes. And that in itself works well. Never top-notch, not really the pace of a Naked Gun or something, but light-hearted and still quite manageable.

Too bad the last half hour is a lot more boring. Still, this was not so bad, had feared for worse. If the sequels also come on Netflix, I'll definitely give them another chance, but I won't put much more effort into it.

2.0*

To combat the increasing crime in an unnamed large city, the mayor takes a drastic decision: from now on the Police Academy must be accessible to everyone, regardless of gender, origin or skin color. In this comedy, we follow a colorful group of benevolent cadets, but the focus is on Carey Mahoney [Steve Guttenberg], who is faced with a choice after his umpteenth confrontation with the police: follow the Police Ademy or go to jail. Since his supervisor Lt. Harris [GW Baily] can't remove him from the training for that reason, Mahoney decides to do everything he can to get back at the people who have bothered him so many times. Bailey and Gaynes (as the dull, forgetful commander) do a fine job, and the introduction of the many characters makes for an onslaught of entertaining moments (for the unforgettable Michael Winslow, a specialist in sound effect imitation), but the level of the jokes quickly descends to a dubious level. Unfortunately, it wouldn't rise above that level in the 6(!) sequels.
