What will happen to you if you refuse conscription? You get to see that answer in a raw way in this strong war-at-home film. With a wonderful cast: Ryan Phillipe stars as the star soldier King who is what it's all about. He is traumatized after accidentally killing a family in Iraq with a grenade and seeing his mates brutally slaughtered. But he thought he had a promise not to be broadcast after the Stop Loss, but that was a lie, so what do you do? Run away, because it's either fight or go to jail. I also loved Channing Tatum's supporting role. Makes a good actor too. And his girlfriend Michelle, of course, who helps King flee.

And maybe it's stupid to call it that, but from that moment on we get a kind of Road Movie and I had to think about Wim Wenders here and there because of certain pictures and atmosphere. It must be me. In any case, the atmosphere is good and the story is just reality. Usually these kinds of subjects in US films cannot be taken seriously, but Stop Loss was dead serious. What was also very beautiful and moving was the ending: King standing at the Mexican border and it really came down to a hard choice: whether to go into hiding in Mexico with a completely different ID and then everything ( family etc). Or just surrender and return to service. So you see that he had no other choice and went into service anyway. Very impressive.

This way we get a very good lesson about the hypocrisy in America that is very bad there. For a murder in America you get the electric chair, but in the meantime it is mandatory to commit as much murder and manslaughter as possible in Iraq or Afghanistan. You will see that life is especially hard and impossible there.....as a soldier.

4.5*

Good anti-war film in which a number of young American soldiers come home from a mission and have to decide what to do next. The story is a bit off the mark at times, but the film does have some good moments (such as when Ryan Phillipe visits the wounded soldier in the hospital). Not particularly gripping or emotional, but entertaining and the young cast does a good job.

That director Kimberly Peirce is also capable of making good films (instead of the crappy remake of "Carrie"), she proves with this film.

The film grabs you right by the throat and opens very beautifully, impressive and moving with a scene of almost 15 minutes. There is also a lot of hard action in that opening. After that opening, the story really starts and we follow the soldiers (especially Ryan Phillippe) on their (temporary) return to America, where of course not everything goes as expected/hoped and also with the necessary disappointments, frustrations and other choices. From that moment on it becomes a real "Drama" film but an excellent one (sometimes a bit cliché and sometimes a bit long-winded). The captivating story is well put together and also looks very realistic and the execution is nicely done. The latter is partly due to the impressive cast who play convincingly. Especially Ryan Phillippe and Channing Tatum of course (great when he is completely drunk digging a hole in the garden).

There are also a few gripping moments in this film, such as the part at the rehabilitation center of American soldiers whose future is completely screwed up. But that is of course the case with every war. The ending was pretty good but also a bit predictable.

PS that Abbie Cornish as "Michelle" was nice and she played well too.
