Kiss Kiss Bang Bang plot

"Sex. Murder. Mystery. Welcome to the party."

When petty thief Harry Lockhart (Robert Downey Jr.) is on the run after a botched robbery, he accidentally walks into a casting for a crime movie. He is taken to Hollywood for a real screen test and is presented there by his producer as the newest 'candy of the month'. In preparation for the screen test, Harry must accompany private detective Perry from Shrike (Val Kilmer), most often called Gay Perry because of his homosexual orientation. As a criminal posing as an actor posing as a detective, Harry comes into contact with Harmony Faith Lane (Michelle Monaghan). Through this unsuccessful actress, Harry and Gay Perry become involved in a murder case that could endanger their own lives.

Super hip film at a fast pace with a lot of dialogue. Do not approach it as a crime film with a comic slant, but as a comedy against a crime story. Because then you will be less disappointed. The film is a series of illogical character choices and absurd events, quite over the top. So don't take it too seriously in advance.

The cool voice-over is still nice and fresh in the beginning, but too often speaks directly to the audience and becomes boring as a result. A complicated crime story is told and sometimes difficult to follow due to the deliberately high tempo. This attempt at intelligent plot seems a bit forced. The humor is generally very good -if you have by now accepted that you are not watching a crime film- and that is what the film should absolutely rely on. The somewhat dark atmosphere is also nice. Downey and Kilmer have nice roles and it looks like they had fun doing it.

Nice look, but no more than that.

'This is exhausting' exclaims Robert Downey Jr. somewhere halfway through the movie. And I agreed.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was quite a disappointment after seeing Shane Black's very nice The Nice Guys. I expected something along those lines, but only partially got my way. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is half detective noir and half comedy. And only some of the comedy works, the rest doesn't really come across. The detective plot is very confused, I had no idea during the film what the approach was and who some characters were. It didn't interest me either, because the film doesn't manage to present its story in an interesting way. The main line for Black doesn't seem plot, but humor; with voice-overs that appeal to the viewer and a lot of rude jokes and squabbles between two men. There are a handful of fun sequences here (Downey wants to act tough with his Russian roulette game and then immediately shoots a guy in the head). But even the humor has run out at some point, then you've seen the bickering and you've had it with that voice-over. And then the film is quite long.

2.5 stars.

No idea what to expect from this. I did enjoy the movie itself. There are some excellent scenes and the humor is also good. It's very absurd at times and I had to laugh a few times. This is definitely not a comedy. Rather a crime film with a humorous layer.

So it doesn't have to be taken seriously, but I wouldn't call it mindless entertainment either. To be honest, after a while I lost track of the plot. And actually it wasn't necessary. The plot is subordinate to the situations. The situations and the roles of the characters were entertaining enough to make you struggle through the movie. At least the plot was very confusing for me. Very busy too, because there are hardly any moments of rest in the film. Downey Jr.'s voiceover. over time it disappoints rather than is pleasant.

Difficult movie to rate. Not bad, not good. A film that disappoints and annoys you or maybe you can just get through with it. Good for once, but too tiring to watch again.
