When Will follows the young offender home after a series of break-ins in his office, he becomes fascinated by the desolate neighborhood where he lives and his blue collar environment. In addition, he is attracted to the boy's mother, the warm-blooded Bosnian seamstress Amira (Juliette Binoche). Will begins to bring his clothes to the unsuspecting Amira for repair jobs in order to see her regularly.

Slow film about relationship problems and such. And you can probably find all kinds of deeper layers in it without too much effort. Is that necessary? I don't think so - even in the top layer it is a pleasant film. But not a masterpiece.

Robin Wright plays very convincingly in my opinion the role of a Swedish who has a not very smooth relationship with Jude Law - some of the details that play a role in that are perhaps a bit caricatured Swedish, but also recognizable. As is often said, Jude Law plays himself - or at least as we often see him. I don't think Juliette Binoche is at her best in this movie - but still by far the best in the movie.

Minghella seems to specialize in films that ripple a bit, I've certainly seen The English Patient and Cold Mountain, and they are quite similar to this film in that respect. Another thing they have in common is a style of imagery that isn't exactly fine filmmaking yet, but it is heading in that direction. In this case, that saves the film - otherwise it would have been too long for me. Although, I don't think I can turn off a film with Juliette Binoche in it.

Strong drama, great acting, realistic because of the basic lines of the story (relationship problems & what they can suffer & how to deal with them), but also because of the location - the culture mix in Kings Cross.
Unfortunately, there are a few beauty flaws thrown at Minghella from Hollywood: including the unrealistic testimonies of Will and his wife in court to exonerate Miro; and Liv jumps out of the car, but six seconds later he's back in Will's arms.
Influences from Ken Loach would have been better...

Excellent film in which a burglary at an architectural firm turns the lives of a number of people upside down. A story in which the course is not easy to predict. The characters and relationships are well developed. The film has a slow pace and the acting is excellent. The last film from director Anthony Minghella.
