"War made them orphans, one man made them legends"
Young British journalist George Hogg rescues a group of orphans during the Japanese invasion of China in 1937. As the Japanese draw ever closer, Hogg, along with an Australian nurse, takes the children on a 1000-mile journey through China to a safe environment.

First twenty minutes the film goes very fast, when Hogg actually arrives at the children's a kind of 'coming of age' adventure film unfolds and more time is taken for things. Beautiful images, beautiful colors, really beautiful nature too, everything looks fine, otherwise a beautiful clash of cultures. Nice ending also with the death of Hogg and the still living children who tell a story in the credits.

Great movie, impressive story. There would have been more here if things had been less dramatized. Now it's bursting with stage dialogues; of those conversations that only occur in scripts. Mitchell's character is also a bit too typical for me, right up to the 'flaw'. Therefore not a generous score, but still a good enough, thanks to the story and the beautiful images.

At Cinemagazine, this film only gets 2.5 points, while they say you won't be bored for a moment, only the character roles are poorly developed. The latter is somewhat correct. In addition, I had opted for a better structure. Whoever reads the reviews thinks that it is mainly about the long journey of more than 1100 km to a safe northern place, but that is only a fragment of the film unfortunately. So no "Defiance" that was also made in 2008!
The first 22 minutes are entertaining with a lot of tension and developments. In addition, everything looks very beautiful. But after 22 minutes you arrive in a calm waterway that now and then ripples a bit more. Some planes flying over a sandstorm and some other inconveniences. The piece in the orphanage takes a bit long and, moreover, not everything comes out well. I would have liked to see some more interactions between the "kids" and the protagonists. We barely saw this. After this long stretch they decide to leave and we see a nice trip to Shandan. This trip with all its beautiful images could have been a lot longer for me. Then you would have bonded more with the boys. But they arrive at their destination relatively quickly. Lee is doing well, but the combination with Hogg comes across as a bit stiff.
The end is as it went. It must be said that this two-hour film starts in 1937 and ends in 1945, but the film doesn't feel that way. As a result, the film is not completely balanced.
Still, I had a good time and he also gets a tight 3.5 from me.
