The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex plot

"Elizabeth I's love for the Earl of Essex threatens to destroy her kingdom."

After a victory in Cadiz, Robert Devereux, the Earl of Essex, returns to England. Although Queen Elizabeth I is actually in love with him, she fears he will take power. So she publicly humiliates him, placing Sir Walter Ralegh above him. A meeting turns into an argument, and Ralegh challenges Devereux to bring the rebellion in Ireland under control. Though Elizabeth I advises against this, Devereux is determined and sets out for Ireland on a nearly impossible mission.

Now very dated, but still somewhat of a reasonable romantic drama with a particular emphasis on drama. The story is quite nice and Errol Flynn and especially Bette Davis play well. But it never really became interesting or exciting. Nice to see, but nothing more.

Very boring with long dialogues and discussions and no action, which must have been very uncomfortable for Errol Flynn.

Olivia de Havilland was an absolute star at the time and indispensable in adventurous films with historical backgrounds, but it is monument Bette Davis who saves this "The private Lives.." from absolute destruction.

I wonder if what is being presented here is historically supported.

With 5 Oscar nominations, there must have been little competition.

Indeed more drama than action, but the sets are beautiful and Davis plays passionately, completely colored, and that looks beautiful.
