Both as drama and road movie not too strong.

The drama feels way too easy. A selfish jerk who turns into a loving brother within a week. And the autistic brother who becomes very attached to him that week. I find it hardly believable. And with a road movie I expect that it will be visually unpacked, if only with the beautiful nature that passes along the way, preferably also beautifully portrayed. That was also quite disappointing.

Rather corny eighties music, and a playing time that is quite long considering that at a certain point it is clear what obstacles traveling with such a person can create.

On a positive note the acting of Hoffman can be mentioned, and the Las Vegas episode was also entertaining, but otherwise it ends. 1*.

Comedy about a serious illness autism. Unfortunately have

autists do not all have the same gift as Raymond.

I have two autistic children of my own and can relate to them.

Nevertheless very enjoyable film with Dustin Hoffman in the role

of his life.

A classic, beautiful soundtrack ok

5 stars

Rain Man suffers from the variant of autism associated with savant syndrome. They used to call such a person an idiot savant, someone who is very intelligent in one area but stupid in other areas. For example, he has a phenomenal memory for numbers and can quickly calculate square roots, but he doesn't understand that a house is worth more than a kilo of pears. He's bad at socializing and it's hard to get through to the person who's hiding behind those rituals and those repetitive phrases.

Dustin Hoffman has used real life examples as inspiration, especially Kim Peek. The result is therefore credible. The only unbelievable scene is the one where he can count the number of toothpicks at a glance. There is also something to be said about his diet: pizza pepperoni, pancakes with maple syrup, fish sticks... That does not seem to me the healthy food you would expect in a medical institution.

Tom Cruise also plays one of his best roles here. He is the character that changes. At first he is a yuppie who shows a lack of empathy himself. Towards the end by connecting with his brother, he has become a more complete person.

The atmosphere and pace are good. During their car journey we see beautiful images of a sunset behind the passing highway. It has that superficial feel of the 80s, while still dealing with a serious subject. And I finally got that Abbott and Costello joke.
