Sweet escapism without too much depth. More attention is usually paid to set design and costuming than to character development, which is further emphasized by the use of Technicolor. This is a particularly colorful film, in which the colors red and yellow are so bright that they are still burned into the retina even after the end. The story takes place around the turn of the century and focuses on a wealthy family in St. Louis. So prepare for a lot of stiff and awkward romance between Southern Belles & Beaus, where the Beaus are reserved and the Belles fantasize a lot about love, but are not allowed to take the initiative due to the laws of etiquette. The predictable ending and all the melodrama that was associated with it unfortunately never becomes really interesting. Despite the simplistic plot, the film exudes a certain charm that I can only attribute to the convincing cast. Character actor Harry Davenport (often typecast as a grandfather) has a particularly enjoyable role. In my opinion, the biggest culprits are the singing and dancing scenes. The songs may be well-known, but they contribute nothing to the whole and often come across as childish and indiscriminate. The vocals are sometimes crudely dubbed, causing problems with lip sync. The attempts at humor almost always fail. In fact, the only thing that makes me laugh is Garland's disgusting froufrou. Visually it is a sweet, in terms of content it is a plate of sprouts. (I don't like Brussels sprouts).

The sugar content is actually too high, but I think the film is a bit too well made to be really annoying. It has a nice rhythm, a few nice songs and quite a bit of humor here and there.

Even compared to other sweet musicals of that time, however, it never becomes a high-flyer, simply because there are no really big highlights.
