"China… Land of unrest… Tomorrow they may starve!"

A Chinese farmer's son, Wang Lung, marries a freed slave girl, Olan. They're starting a family. When a famine strikes, Wang is forced to settle in the city with his family. Together with his wife, he tries to earn enough to enable a return to the countryside.
