Reasonably filmed story with beautiful shots and a well-playing Sheen.

It's not about the story and it certainly isn't about Sheen in the lead role. And despite the fact that the locations also provide beautiful pictures during the tour, it is not very special at all. I especially found the stereotypical supporting roles more annoying than sympathetic. A Dutchman obviously smoking weed, an embittered woman and an Irish writer without inspiration weren't interesting characters to me and seemed to play a role in keeping the story interesting rather than themselves. It may be based on a true story but this was all a bit too thick and coincidental I thought.

The film also has a number of beautiful moments and scenes, just not enough to drag me into their journey for the full 2 hours. There are too many clichés in it to come across as realistic.

Nice to see once, but not more than that for me.

3*

Right after the movie I was in a feel-good mood and promptly gave it four stars. The atmosphere, the adventure, the images, the pace, that Dutch character in between, the recognizable moments of being on a trip and suddenly being 'saddled' with a diverse mix of personalities with different nationalities and a different destination. The reasonably complete picture that the makers try to paint of the tour. And Martin Sheen as the stark Tom, who delivered a strong rendition and for some reason reminded me of Jack Nicholson in About Schmidt and Michael Douglas in Falling Down.

A week later (so now) little of the film has stuck. When I imagine such a long journey, I mainly think of physical discomfort, mental suffering and isolation, but that's not really what the film was about. I also remember some weak scenes, like the one where the Irish character was introduced, I thought that actor was more like a stage actor. And the characters and their story remained a bit stereotypical and superficial.

Feel good at its best. Wonderful walking road movie that stays neatly within the boundaries of the genre. The clichés tumble over each other and nowhere is it really exciting. But oh people, how wonderful it is to occasionally drown in a nothing to worry about film with great actors, beautiful images and a soundtrack that you can sometimes sing along. And there is still something to laugh about, so we spent a good 2 hours with a smile on our face. This is how we will get through the corona time.
