"Leave Normal Behind."

A young American named Jonathan Safran Foer (Elijah Wood) travels to rural Europe. Armed only with a yellowed photo, he sets out in search of Augustine, the woman who, he is told, rescued his grandfather from the Nazis. Accompanied by Alex (Eugene Hutz), his young Ukrainian interpreter who has a comical accent that confuses the tongue, Jonathan embarks on a donquichote-like quest through a devastated landscape, back to an unexpected past.

A decent drama movie...

Comedy is not my genre...

It's funny that little car drives like that...

Great acting...

Funny nice story, not really exciting...

I don't think it's a true story...

Nice environment...

Too bad the Dutch subtitles with back

foreign text, this is sloppy...

Nice HD quality...

Great background music (Dolby Digital)...

Very nice amusing road movie. I hadn't heard of it yet and after some research I read that the film was not released in theaters because of the disappointing cinema results in the United States. It is also the only film by Liev Schreiber, who also wanted to try it as a director. In my opinion a more than successful attempt.

It's a pretty bizarre movie. Of course, the location is somewhere in Ukraine, but the very pleasant frequently occurring gypsy tunes make it nice and light. The setting of the ancient but very solid Trabant also fits completely within the concept.
Elijah Wood is pretty much the star of the film, but it doesn't quite come out in my eyes. It is mainly Alex and his father who provide the atmosphere and depth. The character of Wood, an introverted American Jew who goes in search of the woman who saved his grandparent from the Nazis. You learn very little about the character other than the fact that he is a vegetarian and has a strange habit of hanging relics of all sorts of things on his wall.

The film has some hilarious moments. Alex's gruff father is great and Alex's dictionary English provides fun humor. The conversations about dog phobia, his name, or Jonathan's vegetarianism were great. Towards the end of the film it got a lot more serious and the humor disappeared. The ending leaves the viewer with questions and the death of the father leaves a gap. All in all, a successful debut from the director.

"Why do you do that?"

"Because I wouldn't forget"

Such crazy dialogues are more common in this film that still contains serious events from WWII.

But it is simply a film that you can reproach or praise.

It is special, though, idiosyncratically elaborated with several original camera finds.

Very nice views.
