Diabolical!

I had expected more of an (American) copy of Bond, but it looks more like a parody; there is so much nonsense in this first Flint film. James Coburn plays an out-rarely annoying and arrogant secret agent who, with considerable reluctance, must save the world from an organization out to, um... rid the planet of nuclear weapons, inequality, poverty, and racism? 'That is not my kind of world!' shouts the ever-grinning Yank as he takes on these notorious idealists.

Meanwhile, Flint is having naughty adventures with plenty of ladies, can tell where the bad guys have gone by the ingredients of a French soup, and occasionally stops his heart for 3 hours to stay a bit fit—a trick that naturally comes in very handy. Sometimes quite lame, but after the somewhat slow start (just take the assignment anyway), not unpleasant to watch.

2.5*.

What man wouldn't want Derek Flint's life? He is rich, owns his own harem, and only takes a job when he feels like it. The Japanese beauty Helen Funai (who also had a role in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum that same year) is a particular asset, if you ask me. It is an enjoyable film with James Coburn, who clearly knows nothing about martial arts despite the lessons from Bruce Lee, but apparently feels right at home in a spy spoof. Not that I laughed much; at most, I smiled occasionally at Flint's extravagant lifestyle. It never gets suspenseful either, and the film is a bit too long for me. Coburn fits well into the role of ladykiller and spy with attitude. Also fun is that Connery lookalike in the role of 0008, and the conversation about Spectre. As the icing on the cake, we get the brilliant musical score by Jerry Goldsmith.

"Flint, your government needs you!"
"Yes well, it's good to be wanted sir."

I’ve momentarily forgotten what that other Bond parody was called, but this one also wants to cash in on the Bond hype with more of a wink and humor.

It never really gets exciting; it's just too childish and bland for that. Still, Coburn does a good job, and quite a bit of work has gone into the sets.
