The device, which looks like a crumb vacuum, is having quite a bit of trouble climbing the volcano wall, let alone having to dig to the center of the Earth with that thing.

Aside from that, and the fact that this is a black-and-white, no-budget sci-fi for drive-in cinemas... still a surprisingly entertaining very early precursor to "The Core".

"Not unknown enough," claims a critic in one of my film encyclopedias, but I actually think the quality of this B-movie isn't too bad: an intriguing plot (although I can't imagine that you would eventually be safe from nuclear radiation in any underground space), beautiful shots of the rock formations and inside the caves (also thanks to the nice lighting), no famous faces making identification just a little easier and more effective (just like, for example, The Thing from Another World, coincidentally from the same year), a few nice surprises (particularly that two people die early on, and a third later), the absence of an unequivocally cheerful or optimistic ending, and above all, the unique approach that lends the film the flair of something new. The downsides are evident: the mediocre modeling that makes the Cyclotron look like the Thunderbird 4, the obligatory love story that fortunately takes up little screen time, and the predictable bickering between alpha males. Of course, it is all stiff and amateurish, and scientifically less than nothing of it is likely correct, but I personally enjoyed watching it nonetheless. Disbanded or not, I would be quite willing to pay a contribution for the Society To Save Civilization.
