Americans are masters at retelling such events and like no other they find the perfect mix of attitudes and emotions, if there are: pride, strength of character and perseverance, good will above all and of course the necessary sentimentality. It makes this "We are Marshall" a good movie, even if the ending of the story is perfectly predictable.

Pleasantly surprised after watching this movie. Of course the film is full of clichés and the emotion is played a lot, but that doesn't bother me and doesn't detract from the film.

Initially, the film unfolds as a very modest drama with little frills. I think the extent to which the bad news gets through to the family and residents via telephone and radio is particularly strong. No exaggerated emotions or heavy music, very natural in that sense. Difficult decisions and choices follow we proceed, how do we proceed and with whom do we proceed. In the end, the choice falls on the rather special Lengyel, which is portrayed very nicely by MMC. After the initial optimism and the first Emiel-Rattelband-chakka wave have subsided , it turns out that it is not going to be very easy and the emphasis is on 'how to deal with' rather than pick up the thread again and it's all about winning. The quarrel that then arises on the field and between players and staff seems very authentic to me, I can reflect very well in it. It is only logical that everything and everyone is full of frustration. That they will eventually win a match is no surprise, but I think it's better that the emphasis is on the fact that after that match and the stakes show that there is life after death. The fact that they lose almost everything without a chance fits perfectly into the picture. That is of course true, but also realistic. Message from the movie: Life goes on and there is always light at the end of the tunnel.

Nice sports drama in the vein of Remember the Titans and United of course.

Ohw...by the way that Brian Geraghty, would he also be cast for something other than those cry-cry-types who are the only ones who think he's having a hard time? Goddamn, can hardly stand that difficult head anymore.

Sometimes the sentiment is so over the top that it's hard to ignore. Americans do well on this type of film and although it is really too much of a good thing, I can secretly enjoy these kinds of films. The mentality of those Americans and school sports is sometimes too ridiculous for words, but on the other hand it also has something romantic and tragic. Furthermore, they don't praise the team too much and everyone has their owner's personal struggles, although it doesn't go beyond bubbling on the surface. Perhaps it's also a good thing that this aspect was manageable, because the sports part itself is not really very interestingly portrayed. They talk about "the Veer" a number of times, but in the end I have no idea if this was done well. Too many lines are put out and not all are fished in properly.

What's left is a fun, but nothing special drama based on real events. And that always piques my interest.

3.0*
